In this application note we show how using SEM-EDS can help with failure analysis, reverse engineering or identify wear characteristics. SEM-EDS provides a quantitative view that saves time and eliminates human bias for brake pad analysis when compared to traditional X-ray maps. Through this statistical approach brake pad developers can get a clearer view of how the brake pad changes during use and make changes to improve performance so the phrase “Hit the brakes”, isn’t so frightening.
